2010’s ~ Yonsei University Press Leading Multi-Media Culture and Globalization

As Yonsei University Press was reorganized as an executive agency, the Press was standing at a critical crossroads. In those days, YUP concentrated on creating higher consumer brand recognition to make Yonsei University Press a world-class publisher. To this end, YUP reformed and reorganized the Press’ publication deliberation system. Through the innovation, YUP built up a preliminary review system and publishing standards to strengthen the Press’ academic merit and profitability, and made every book printed at YUP to pass a review system. Not only this, but the Press also introduced a cost accounting system as a way of consolidating the soundness of inventory asset by taking reasonable cost analyses. Meanwhile, YUP began to appoint external publishing specialists as members of the committee of deliberation and review, giving YUP a wider, deeper range of specialties in terms of management and publication.
 

     To overcome the restrictions as a university press and promote YUP’s new inclusive image, YUP launched Cheongsong Media as a brand new subsidiary publishing label of Yonsei University Press, and initiated its publishing business in 2013. As a part of foreign business, YUP signed the agreement in 2014, with Linking Publishing Corporation (聯經出版事業公司) in Taiwan to export its copyright of Yonsei Korean Language, and YUP re-confirmed the outstanding fame of the textbooks of the Korean Language Institute throughout Asia. In the same year, under the newly-signed contract with an International distributor with a warehouse in the US, YUP constructed a worldwide distribution system which allowed for easier and quicker distribution of the Press’ books to the world. With the purpose of overcoming the limitations of the domestic publishing market, YUP has strengthened the Press’ oversea marketing including the Press’ participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Guadalajara International Book Fair since 2015. 

 

     In particular the Yonsei Chinese-Chinese-Korean Dictionary, published in 2015, introduced a bilateral interpretation of a dictionary for the first time in the world. It not only is the optimal Chinese reference books, but is also a channel of cultural interchange between Korea and China. Yonsei University Press is awaiting the publication of Standard Korean-Korean-Chinese Bilingual Dictionaries followed by Yonsei Chinese-Chinese-Korean Dictionary, and Chinese brief edition of the Korean-Korean-Chinese Bilingual Dictionaries, which will be published in accordance with the contract with Peking University Press of China. As the history of Yonsei University Press proves Yonsei University Press has kept changing to adapt to the changing environment and needs, and currently YUP is working to lead the industry in the era of ‘online’ and ‘globalization’. 

 

 

Yonsei Univeristy Press: VISION 2030
– Toward the Top 10 University Presses in the World

 

Yonsei University Press has launched a movement of enriching the substance and planning for sustainable development to achieve the Press’ goal of VISION 2030. VISION 2030 stands for YUP’s mission of 1) moving up the Value to boost Yonsei’s status in the domestic and international community, 2) Internationalization, 3) strengthening Scholarship, 4) building the Infrastructure for strengthening the competitiveness, 5) Obligation to increase profits, and 6) expanding the cooperation and Network with other agencies.


     To begin with, YUP is working to get a potential reader by maximizing the promotion effects through upgrading the Press’ official website and publishing a webzine. By utilizing the latest systems as Google Play Books program as well as Kyobo Bookstore’s e-book, Amazon Kindle, the Press also aims to secure and allow multi-device access to the readers. YUP is improving the Press’ readiness for the market change ‘from off-line to online’ through these steps; forming IT partnerships with portal sites via dictionary DBs, the enlargement of YUP’s overseas business cooperation, and discovering a new content replacing the demand for paper books in the long term. As a result of these steps-ahead preparations, Yonsei University Press have been awarded for the excellent executive agencies two years in a row (2015, 2016) in recognition of its excellent business performance and distinctive improvement in the operations management.


     Yonsei University Press will celebrate the 90th anniversary in 2019. The Press has published more than 1.2 - 1.3 thousand titles, and distributed 900 titles since 1955. All members of Yonsei University Press are working together with great pride, to enter the list of the top 10 university presses in the world by 2030, which will mark the 101st anniversary of Yonhi College Press’s first publication of Choi Hyun-Bae’s Urimalbon (1929), under the motto ‘VISION 2030’.
